What they found

Why this matters for families
Parents naturally notice what other families are doing, but peer behavior is not a diagnostic. A 2026 field experiment found that information about other parents' tutoring purchases materially changed families' own tutoring investment. The better decision rule is to ask what this particular student needs and whether the support is producing measurable progress.

It is the opposite: parents can make large education-spending decisions based on what they think other families are doing, even when nothing about their own child's learning need has changed. Noor should keep the decision anchored to the student's baseline, goals, skill gaps, and evidence of progress.
During strategy calls, redirect social-comparison anxiety toward student-specific evidence. Diagnose the academic bottleneck, explain why a given frequency or program is being recommended, and avoid using peer pressure, prestige, or 'everyone else is doing it' as the reason to enroll. Track progress so families can judge whether the investment is serving their child.
