What they found
- Black and non-Black children experienced similar cognitive gains at the end of Head Start, but the estimated gains followed different trajectories afterward.
- Black children retained an estimated 0.23 standard deviation cognitive gain at the end of kindergarten, reported at p < 0.10, while the comparable gain among non-Black children faded.
- A selection-corrected decomposition attributed 74 percent of the Black and non-Black fadeout differential to differences in cognitive growth under Head Start nonparticipation.
- Mediation analyses provided suggestive, not causal, evidence that kindergarten school achievement levels and time spent in adult-directed individual activities contributed to the differing trajectories.
What the study does not prove
- The 0.23 standard deviation kindergarten estimate is a subgroup result reported at the 10 percent significance level and should be interpreted cautiously.
- Follow-up attrition reduced the sample from 1,977 children with baseline assessments to 1,439 observed through kindergarten and 1,193 through third grade.
- The non-Black comparison combines children from multiple racial and ethnic groups, which can conceal important variation.
- The mediation and counterfactual analyses are model-based and do not prove that later school environments caused the persistence difference.
