What they found

  • A one standard deviation increase in girls' peer math belief lowered the probability that girls agreed boys are better at math by 6.1 percentage points.
  • A one standard deviation increase in boys' peer math belief raised that probability by 10.1 percentage points.
  • Boys' peer math beliefs lowered girls' own Grade 8 math belief by 0.126 standard deviations.
  • Girls' peer math beliefs raised girls' later math test scores by 0.103 standard deviations, while the estimated boys' peer-belief effect on test scores was near zero and statistically insignificant.
  • Girls entering with lower math beliefs or stronger stereotypes were especially vulnerable to negative peer signals.

What the study does not prove

  • The study used quasi-random classroom assignment rather than a randomized manipulation of peer beliefs.
  • The evidence comes from Chinese middle schools in 2013 to 2015, so exact effects should not be transferred directly to United States classrooms.
  • Peer beliefs were self-reported and the mechanisms behind the effects were not fully isolated.
  • The findings do not show that boys as classmates reduce girls' mathematics achievement.
