What they found
- Placement-score differences accounted for 83 percent of the socioeconomic gap in assignment to elite public high schools in the model.
- Preferences accounted for 6 percent of the elite-school assignment gap and location accounted for 5 percent.
- For less-preferred technical schools, preferences played a larger role, accounting for 64 percent of the socioeconomic assignment gap.
- Higher-socioeconomic-status students retained a substantial placement-test advantage beyond contemporaneous measures of middle-school GPA and low-stakes test performance.
What the study does not prove
- The study uses a structural model and decomposition rather than a randomized intervention, so the percentages depend on modeling assumptions.
- The setting is a historical centralized admissions system in Mexico City and should not be generalized directly to U.S. admissions.
- The remaining placement-test advantage does not establish that private tutoring or test preparation caused the gap.
- Observed academic measures and socioeconomic proxies may not capture every relevant difference among students.
